Case Studies on Organisational Change and Community Development

Ikea Systems Redesign and Organisational Change

This case study describes an alternative to months-long systems redesign. In one meeting, the global furniture retailer, IKEA, applying the principle of “whole system in the room,” created a new structure and process for product design, manufacture, and distribution, decentralizing an agglomeration of “silos” that no longer served. Some 52 stakeholders examined the existing system, developed a new design, created a strategic plan and formed task forces led by key executives to implement it. In 18 hours, the plan was developed and signed off on by the company president and key people from all affected functions, with active support from several customers. Macquarie University Sport & Recreation Strategic Planning and Organisational Change

In early 2005, the community based organisation, Macquarie University Sport & Recreation (MUSR) decided that they were fed up with the usual approach to developing strategic plans that make for good door stops but not much else.

They knew that the right approach would somehow engage and develop enthusiasm amongst not only the Board and staff but also other important external stakeholders.

They went in search of a transformational approach that would achieve this and came across an approach called ‘Future Search’.
